Creating Your First Classroom
Once you have signed up and logged in, your first step is to create a classroom. This is where you will manage your tamariki, assign activities, and track progress.
Step 1: Create a Class
- Navigate to Dashboard > Classrooms from the sidebar.
- Select Create New Class.
- Enter your class name (e.g. "Room 12" or "Year 4 Kōwhai").
- Choose the year level (Years 1–8).
- Select Save.
You can create multiple classes if you teach across different groups or year levels.
Step 2: Add Students
There are three ways to add tamariki to your class:
- Manual entry — Add students one by one with their first name and last initial.
- CSV upload — Upload a spreadsheet with student names. Download our template from the classroom settings page.
- Class code — Share a unique join code with students so they can add themselves from a device.
Student accounts are privacy-focused. LearnSpace only requires a first name and last initial — no email addresses are needed for tamariki.
Step 3: Organise Groups
Within each class you can create smaller groups for differentiated learning:
- Open your class and select Groups.
- Select Add Group and give it a name (e.g. "Extension Reading" or "Times Tables Support").
- Drag students into the appropriate groups.
Groups allow you to assign targeted activities and view progress by ability level.
Assigning Apps to Your Class
Once your class is set up, you can assign activities from any of the three apps:
- MyFeedback Pro — Set writing prompts and choose feedback modes.
- Word Wand — Assign reading passages or let students scan their own texts.
- Monster Maths Lab — Choose operations and difficulty levels for maths practice.
Navigate to Assign Activity from your class view and follow the prompts for each app.
Tips for a Smooth Setup
- Use consistent naming conventions for classes across terms.
- Review the student list at the start of each term to remove leavers and add new enrolments.
- Encourage tamariki to personalise their profiles — it builds engagement with the platform.
