Why App Safety Matters
With so many learning apps available, it can be difficult for whānau to know which ones are genuinely safe for tamariki. Not all apps that claim to be educational meet the same standards for privacy, advertising, and content quality. Taking a few minutes to evaluate an app before your child uses it can make a real difference.
A Safety Checklist for Parents
Use this checklist when considering any learning app for your tamariki:
Privacy and Data
- Does the app have a clear, accessible privacy policy?
- Does it explain what data is collected from children and how it is used?
- Is data stored securely, ideally within Aotearoa or a trusted jurisdiction?
- Can you request deletion of your child's data?
Advertising and In-App Purchases
- Is the app completely ad-free?
- Are there any in-app purchases that tamariki could make accidentally?
- Does the app use manipulative design patterns (such as countdown timers or limited-time offers) aimed at children?
Content Quality
- Is the content aligned to a recognised curriculum, such as the NZ Curriculum?
- Is the content age-appropriate and reviewed by educators?
- Does the app adapt to your child's level rather than offering one-size-fits-all content?
Transparency
- Is it clear who made the app and where they are based?
- Does the company respond to parent enquiries?
- Are there regular updates and improvements?
