What Is Monster Maths Lab?
Monster Maths Lab is a maths practice app that makes daily number work engaging for tamariki in Years 1–8. Students practise times tables, division, addition, and subtraction through structured exercises, earning monster rewards as they progress.
How the Monster Reward System Works
As students complete maths challenges, they earn points to unlock, customise, and evolve their own monsters. This provides consistent motivation without distracting from the learning itself. Monsters are purely cosmetic rewards — every student progresses through the same rigorous maths content regardless of their collection.
Operations Covered
Monster Maths Lab covers four core operations:
- Addition — From simple single-digit sums through to multi-digit addition with regrouping.
- Subtraction — Progressive difficulty including borrowing and word problems.
- Multiplication — Times tables from 1x through to 12x, with mixed practice and speed challenges.
- Division — Division facts, remainders, and connections to multiplication.
Content difficulty adjusts automatically based on student performance, ensuring each child works at their appropriate level.
Assigning Maths Practice
- Navigate to Monster Maths Lab from your class dashboard.
- Select Assign Practice.
- Choose the operation(s) you want students to focus on.
- Set a target (e.g. "10 minutes daily" or "Complete Level 3 multiplication").
- Assign to your full class or specific groups.
You can also allow free practice where students choose their own focus areas.
Tracking Progress
Your teacher dashboard shows:
- Accuracy rates by operation and student.
- Time spent on maths practice each day.
- Facts that individual students find challenging (e.g. 7x8, 6x9).
- Class-wide trends to inform your teaching focus.
Tips for Effective Use
- Set short daily practice sessions (10–15 minutes) rather than longer weekly blocks.
- Use the "challenging facts" report to create targeted warm-up activities for your maths lessons.
- Celebrate progress milestones as a class — the monster collection makes this natural and fun.
- Pair Monster Maths Lab with your regular maths programme rather than using it as a standalone replacement.
Curriculum Alignment
Monster Maths Lab content maps to the Number and Algebra strand of the NZ Mathematics and Statistics learning area across curriculum levels 1–4.
