Making Maths Fun at Home

Many tamariki find maths challenging, but with the right tools and encouragement, they can build real confidence. Monster Maths Lab turns curriculum-aligned maths practice into an engaging experience where tamariki earn monster rewards as they progress.

Getting Started with Monster Maths Lab

How It Works

  1. Open Monster Maths Lab from the LearnSpace dashboard.
  2. Your child selects their current learning focus or continues where they left off.
  3. The app presents maths challenges matched to their level.
  4. As they answer correctly, they earn rewards and unlock new monsters for their collection.

The app covers key numeracy strands from the NZ Curriculum, including number knowledge, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and measurement.

Adaptive Difficulty

Monster Maths Lab adjusts the difficulty based on your child's responses. If they are finding problems too easy, the challenge increases. If they are struggling, the app provides additional support and simpler problems to rebuild confidence before moving forward.

Tips for Supporting Maths at Home

Keep Sessions Short

For most tamariki, 10–15 minutes of focused maths practice is more effective than longer sessions. Short, regular practice builds stronger retention than occasional marathon efforts.

Connect Maths to Everyday Life

Look for opportunities to use maths in daily routines:

  • Cooking together — measuring ingredients, doubling recipes
  • Shopping — comparing prices, calculating change
  • Travelling — reading distances, estimating arrival times
  • Playing games — keeping score, counting moves

Avoid Pressure

Let your child work at their own pace. Monster Maths Lab is designed to be encouraging, not stressful. If your child gets frustrated, take a break and come back later.

Review Progress Together

Check the progress reports in LearnSpace to see which areas your child is doing well in and where they might need extra support. Use this as a conversation starter rather than a test result.

Aligned to the NZ Curriculum

Monster Maths Lab covers the mathematics and statistics learning area of the NZ Curriculum for Years 1–8. Content is regularly updated to reflect current curriculum expectations, so your child is always practising relevant skills.
