Why Reading at Home Matters
Reading regularly at home is one of the most effective ways to support your child's learning. Research consistently shows that tamariki who read with whānau develop stronger literacy skills, broader vocabulary, and greater confidence. Word Wand makes it easy to turn everyday reading into a supported learning experience.
Getting Started with Word Wand
Word Wand is a camera-based reading companion. Your child points their device camera at a physical book, and Word Wand provides real-time support as they read.
Setting Up
- Open Word Wand from the LearnSpace dashboard.
- Ensure your device camera is enabled and the lighting is good.
- Hold the device steady above the page so the text is clearly visible.
- Let your child read aloud — Word Wand follows along and offers help when needed.
What Word Wand Helps With
- Pronunciation — When your child encounters an unfamiliar word, Word Wand can model the correct pronunciation.
- Comprehension — The app offers gentle prompts to check understanding as your child reads.
- Vocabulary — New or challenging words are highlighted with simple, age-appropriate definitions.
Tips for Building Reading Habits
Create a Routine
Set aside 15–20 minutes each day for reading. Consistency matters more than duration. After school or before bed are popular times for many whānau.
Let Tamariki Choose
Children engage more deeply when they choose their own books. Visit your local library together or let them pick from books around the house.
Read Together
Shared reading is powerful, especially for younger tamariki. Take turns reading pages or paragraphs. Ask open-ended questions like "What do you think will happen next?" to encourage thinking.
Celebrate Progress
Use the progress reports in LearnSpace to acknowledge milestones together. Even small improvements in fluency or vocabulary are worth celebrating.
Connecting with the NZ Curriculum
Word Wand is aligned to the literacy expectations of the NZ Curriculum for Years 1–8. The support it provides adapts to your child's reading level, so it remains helpful as they grow. Check your child's progress reports to see how their reading is tracking over time.
